If someone were to ask me what processes I think would be needed for another worldwide war to break out, or for a global total anarchy to unfold that would dismantle the current order, I wouldn't hesitate for a second with my answers. 1. power outage 2. internet shutdown 3. mass deletion of Facebook accounts without explanation. These 3 things, I am convinced, would trigger processes that even the Incas alluded to regarding the end of the world.
Last night my internet was cut off because I forgot to pay the bills for a while, and now I'm staring like a fish, and no joke, I'm desperate. To make matters worse, my internet and cable TV are connected, so I don't have a TV either, meaning I'm facing the longest night in years. The last time I got screwed this badly was when, a few days after moving in in England, there was no electricity, no heating, nothing in the house, and I was sitting alone in that damn big house 2600km from Budapest in January, in a cold house, among a bunch of ugly English people, behind the Pakistani quarter. It was great. I was already aware then that power outages are the best way to control births, with the great New York blackout of 2004 being a prime example, when there was no power anywhere from Manhattan to New Jersey for 2 full days. As many babies were born as on any average day in China...
Furthermore, I believe and am perfectly convinced that if the internet were shut down for a week, terrible things would happen here, because the internet keeps us in an artificially apathetic coma, although our human relationships would significantly improve. I haven't had internet for more than two hours, and I'm already starting to feel like a democrat – not in the Gyurcsány sense, of course – and I'm getting really pissed off because I can't comment on the "No to 37% EVA" group on Facebook, or how they could possibly think of a 3% property tax. In our case, this type of tax would cost 1,200,000 HUF annually instead of 200,000 HUF, and that would only be the damn property tax, and then all those idiots in parliament wonder why soon more Hungarians will live in England than at home. Of course, I'm aware of these problems on other days of the year too, but somehow it doesn't seem to matter as much then because in the http:// world, everything is different. As long as there is internet, and a tool in our hands to express these injustices, everything is okay, because as long as there is Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, the option to comment or blog, then revolution here will only be in the number of likes. As long as there's a place to write "Matolcsy, your mother," "Gyurcsány, you ass-face, get out already, it's because of you that Jobbik will be the second-strongest party," or "the banks can all go to hell, one by one," as long as we can write this out of ourselves, at least we feel like we've done something, and exercised our long-lost democratic rights.
Just try living without the internet for 3 days, but not just without the damn Facebook, but without the internet in general. No Origo, no dating sites or food delivery, no downloads, no Neptun, no email, and no Google, the existence of which is slowly rendering at least 12 years of the 16-year education system completely superfluous. Every ten minutes, I instinctively open the Chrome browser, and when the behajtas@t-home.hu page comes up, I always burst into tears. It's like a porn folder. You know you can't live without it, but you don't appreciate its existence until your drive crashes and all your films are gone in an instant. This already happened to me in 2004; I know the feeling, I know what I'm talking about. I still haven't emotionally recovered from that day, and I probably won't recover from this night either...
