Individualist - Level 9
Megosztás
Level 1 – The Fully Authentic Creator
Healthy State
At the highest developmental level of personality type Four, an individual reaches the point they have sought their entire life; more accurately, they no longer seek anything because there is no longer any sense of lack within them. They no longer compare themselves to others, observing who has a better life, deeper connections, or more unique talents. At Level 1, the search ends. Not because all questions have been answered, but because they realize that the self is not to be found, but to be lived. They do not wish to be unique, nor do they seek to prove their sensitivity, depth, or specialness. They are simply themselves.
Their creativity truly blossoms at this level. They no longer create to show how special they are, nor to fill an inner void. Creation becomes self-expression. What they create radiates peace, authenticity, and human depth. Individualists in this state are capable of creating at the highest level, transcending the present era, creating epoch-making works.
Their relationship with themselves also undergoes a radical change. They no longer feel ashamed of their mistakes, weaknesses, or vulnerabilities. They know these are part of the human condition. They do not try to be perfect, nor do they try to be someone other than who they are.
Fours operating at this level often give an impression of extreme wisdom. Not because they have all the answers, but because they deeply accept life as it is, without idealization. They do not flee from pain, but neither do they get stuck in it. The wholeness they sought in relationships, creation, love, or the search for identity was within them all along. This realization provides the deep inner peace that emanates from the most developed Fours.
Level 2 – The Inspiring Artist
Healthy State
The Level 2 Individualist is still within a very healthy range of functioning. At this level, the Four already possesses significant self-awareness, maintains a strong connection to their own feelings and inner world, yet uniqueness and self-expression remain important to them. The difference compared to lower levels is that they do this not out of deficiency or a need for validation, but out of natural self-identity.
They are particularly sensitive to beauty. Not only in art or nature, but also in human stories. Closeness is not threatening to them, but a natural need. At the same time, at this level, they do not yet expect their partner to perfectly understand all their feelings. One of the most beautiful qualities of Level 2 is that the Four no longer flees from everyday life. They do not believe that beauty can only be found in extraordinary moments. They are increasingly able to see the special in simple things.
This is the level where the Four is still intense, deep, and extremely sensitive, but their identity is not yet defined by lack or suffering. Emotional depth is not a burden to them at this point.
Level 3 – The Sensitive Self-Expresser
Healthy State
This is the last level of healthy functioning for the individualist. Here, the Four is still fundamentally balanced, creative, and authentic, but is more strongly preoccupied with their own identity and uniqueness. They do not yet suffer from a sense of lack, but they are increasingly consciously searching for what makes them unique and different from others.
In this state, the Four is extremely self-reflective. They think a lot about themselves, their motivations, their feelings, and the meaning of their life. They are interested in psychology, human nature, art, or any field that can bring them closer to understanding themselves.
At the same time, at this level, a subtle sensitivity to how understood they feel already emerges. If they feel their partner does not understand their inner world, they may experience disappointment. This does not yet lead to serious problems, but the beginning of a pattern that will later become stronger is already visible. In their friendships, they are generally attracted to those with whom they can discuss deeper topics. They are less interested in superficial conversations or status-based connections. They prefer a few truly close relationships to many superficial acquaintances.
This is the point where the Four is still healthily searching for themselves, yet a turning point is already visible, because if the search turns into comparison, and the desire for specialness becomes stronger than self-acceptance, then the Four transitions to Level 4, where they increasingly begin to focus on what is missing, and with that, we step out of the healthy functioning dynamic.
Level 4 – The Romantic Idealist
Average State
Level 4 is the point where the experience of lack first becomes prominent in the functioning of the Four personality. We are not yet talking about serious emotional problems or self-pity, but their attention gradually shifts from what is present in their life to what is missing from it. Fours at this level often feel that their life is not yet authentic. While they may appear successful and lovable externally, internally there is often a growing feeling that something fundamental is missing. They may not be able to articulate what it is, but they feel its absence.
Their creativity is still strong, but it is increasingly intertwined with longing. Many Fours in this state create most romantically. They are drawn to grand emotions, nostalgia, unattainable loves, lost opportunities, and the melancholic beauty of life.
Idealization first truly appears in their relationships. Fours often love not only the other person but also what the other person represents for them. The problem begins when reality catches up with fantasy. When the partner makes mistakes, when they are not perfect, when they do not understand all their feelings, when they start behaving as an ordinary person. In such cases, Fours often experience disappointment. Not necessarily because the other is a bad partner, but because reality cannot compete with the image they have built in their imagination.
Idealism also appears in work and self-realization. They are rarely satisfied with what they have achieved. Even if objectively successful, they often feel that their true calling is still ahead of them. As if the real story of their life has not yet begun.
This is the point where the Four is still a creative, lovable, and deep personality, but they are already starting to search externally for something they actually want to find within. From here, the path leads to Level 5, where the feeling of lack will become the most dominant part of their personality's functioning.
Level 5 – The Individualist Living in Lack
Average State
At this point, the feeling of lack becomes the fundamental experience of the personality. The Four pays less and less attention to what is present in their life, and increasingly focuses on what is not.
Outwardly, they often appear unique, creative, and interesting. Others often see them as sensitive, deep-thinking individuals who view the world from a unique perspective. But internally, the feeling that something fundamental is missing from their life, and that they can never truly be satisfied because of it, grows stronger. At this level, the Four spends a lot of time preoccupied with themselves. They constantly analyze their feelings, past, relationships, and desires, however, this self-examination no longer leads to development. They often rehash the same thoughts and feelings over and over again, while finding it increasingly difficult to escape them.
The Four at this level tends to compare themselves to others. Not necessarily in a material or social sense, but emotionally. They often feel that others live more naturally, connect more easily, or are simply happier. While they see others' lives as complete, they often perceive their own as lacking.
In romantic relationships, they long for deep love and connection, yet they can place almost impossible demands on their partner, seeking an understanding that no one can truly provide in its entirety. In friendships, the feeling of separation also intensifies. They often feel that most people don't think as deeply, don't feel as intensely, or don't see the world in as nuanced a way as they do. This sometimes leads to loneliness even when surrounded by people.
In work and self-realization, they also find it difficult to feel satisfied. They often feel that their true calling is still ahead of them. If they achieve a goal, they enjoy it for a short time, but soon the feeling that something is still missing reappears.
This is the point where the Four is still a functional, creative, and lovable person, but their inner world is increasingly defined by lack, longing, and comparison. If they slide further down, at Level 6, the feeling of lack gradually begins to turn into self-pity and emotional withdrawal.
Level 6 – The Self-Pitying Recluse
Average - Unhealthy State
Level 6 is the point where the individualist no longer simply experiences a deficit, but gradually identifies with it and begins to feel that there is something inherently wrong with them. Their attention is almost constantly directed at their own emotional pain. They often feel that others don't understand how difficult life is for them. They don't necessarily voice this, but internally, the feeling of being somehow separated from other people grows stronger.
In this state, the Four often spends a lot of time analyzing their own feelings. They repeatedly rehash past hurts, disappointments, and losses. Not because they enjoy suffering, but because they feel these pains have become part of their identity; instead of processing problems, they often re-experience them.
After a breakup, they don't just mourn the loss of the relationship. They also mourn what the relationship meant to them, what they hoped for from it, what it could have become, and often they mourn the feeling itself.
Outwardly, they often appear melancholic, distant, or difficult to approach. People often sense that something is burdening them, but they don't always know exactly what it is.
The Four at this level may begin to romanticize suffering. Not consciously, but because pain becomes one of their strongest points of connection to themselves. In their friendships, they may also become increasingly isolated. They often feel that most people are superficial. They find it increasingly difficult to form relationships in which they truly feel at home. Disappointment also appears in work and self-realization. What they previously found inspiring may now seem empty or meaningless. They find it increasingly difficult to find joy in the present because their attention is constantly directed at what is missing.
One of the most dangerous characteristics of Level 6 is that the individualist begins to feel their wounds are part of their personality. They no longer say "I feel pain," but rather "I am the pain."
This level is not yet a complete collapse, but it is a state where the Four gradually isolates themselves in the world of their own pain. The longer they remain here, the more they may lose touch with those who genuinely wish to be close to them. In the next level, Level 7, this isolation becomes even deeper, and emotional suffering can almost completely take over their personality.
Level 7 – The Despondent Negative
Unhealthy State
At Level 7, for the individualist, sadness, loss, lack, and loneliness are no longer simple emotions, but become central parts of their personality.
Fours at this point often feel that something fundamental is missing from their life, but they no longer truly believe they will ever find it. Longing and disappointment are present simultaneously within them. They spend a lot of time re-experiencing past events, processing old relationships, missed opportunities, or painful memories. These thoughts return again and again, as if they cannot let them go. They revisit old places where they once thought themselves happy, only to be filled with endless sorrow that it, too, is gone, and to see how much worse the world has become.
They increasingly begin to view the world through their own pain, easily seeing what has passed even in a joyful event. In a new relationship, they look for when they will be disappointed. Not because they want to be negative, but because their attention is almost automatically drawn to losses and unfulfilled desires.
Intense tension appears particularly in their relationships. They deeply long for someone to understand them, yet they increasingly disbelieve that this is possible. If someone approaches them, for a while they hope that they have finally found the person who truly sees them. However, when it turns out that the other person cannot perfectly connect with all their feelings and thoughts, they experience disappointment, and therefore often simultaneously desire closeness and flee from it. They open up, then withdraw. They approach, then pull away. Their partner often feels that they can never truly get close to them, because there always remains a part that is unattainable.
In this state, the Four often feels their own suffering is special. Not consciously, and not because they are proud of it, but because they have become so accustomed to the pain that they can hardly imagine themselves without it. Suffering becomes an identity. Instead of telling themselves they are experiencing pain, they increasingly feel that they are the pain itself.
Their work and other areas of life can also become more extreme. When inspired, they can be extraordinarily creative and productive. However, when sadness or hopelessness overwhelms them, they find it difficult to find motivation. Their moods strongly influence their performance and decisions.
One of the greatest dangers of Level 7 is that the Four gradually becomes isolated. Not necessarily physically, but emotionally. They increasingly believe that no one is capable of truly understanding them. This conviction slowly becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy because the less they believe in the possibility of connection, the harder it becomes for them to let people close.
This is the point where pain is no longer just an emotion, but an entire worldview. The Four still longs for the same things as always: love, connection, and self-identity. They just increasingly disbelieve that these are actually available to them.
Level 8 – The Collapsing Melancholic
Unhealthy, Self-Damaging State
At Level 8, the individualist not only feels the lack but gradually loses hope of ever finding what they seek. The inner longing that once moved and inspired them now increasingly becomes a source of pain. They feel that life promised something important, but this promise was never fulfilled.
In this state, the Four's emotional world becomes extremely dark. They are no longer simply sad or disappointed, but experience deep hopelessness. The things they previously longed for, such as love, self-realization, closeness, or happiness, increasingly seem unattainable to them. Not because they are objectively so, but because they have lost faith within themselves that they can ever receive them.
The creativity that was once inspiring also changes. They no longer create out of the joy of self-expression, but often give form to their pain. They often feel that the only place where they can truly be themselves is the dark and melancholic space of their own inner world, which leads them to withdraw more and more from others.
Isolation appears particularly strongly in their relationships. They deeply long for love, but at the same time, they are increasingly convinced that no one is truly capable of understanding them. If someone approaches them, they often receive them with suspicion or hopelessness. They may feel that the other person will sooner or later disappoint them, just like everyone else.
At this level, the Four may be prone to extending their own pain to their entire life. From a loss, they may draw the conclusion that they will always be a loser. From a disappointment, that they will never truly be loved. From a lonely period, that they will be alone forever. Their thinking becomes increasingly absolute; they no longer see individual problems, but perceive their entire life as problematic, and hope is gradually replaced by disillusionment.
Severe self-flagellation begins, self-punishment, and the risk of suicide increases manyfold. This is the point where the Four not only feels isolated but gradually loses touch with hope. In the next, Level 9, this hopelessness deepens into a complete self-esteem crisis, where they begin to see not only life but themselves as fundamentally flawed, useless, and unlovable.
Level 9 – Collapse of Self-Image
Pathological State
This is the deepest and most severe state. At this point, we are no longer simply talking about intense sadness, loneliness, or a feeling of lack, but about the complete destruction of the personality.
In previous levels, some hope remained that they would one day find the relationship, calling, or life they longed for, but at Level 9, even hope gradually disappears. The Four increasingly concludes that the problem is not with circumstances, but with themself. Deep shame appears, not simple guilt related to a specific action, but the feeling that there is something fundamentally wrong, something unlovable, in their entire being.
In their inner world, there is almost no room left for anything other than pain. Life loses its colors, and the things that once inspired them, like art, love, self-expression, or their dreams, now offer neither comfort nor momentary relief from their suffering. The world appears increasingly bleak and meaningless.
The deepest pain, however, is not loneliness, but the individualist's self-image. At this level, the Four no longer asks what is missing from their life, but becomes the lack itself.
At this level, severe mental crises, dissociative disorders, and irreversible depression develop, and the risk of suicide increases exponentially. Without external professional help, complete collapse is inevitable, as the individualist by this point has lost all hope. At this level, the concept of development is meaningless and almost entirely impossible.
The unhealthy 4 can gradually lose the distinction between objective reality and their own subjective experience. Not because they are foolish or have delusions, but because they consider their emotional world to be the primary reality. If they feel hurt, then for them, the other person becomes hurtful; if they feel rejected, then for them, the world becomes rejecting; if they experience envy, then they perceive the happiness of others as injustice.
Therefore, in the darkest states of the 4, the moral distortion often centers on the special status given to their own pain. This is when the final distortion of reality occurs, and the 4 experiences it as if their suffering grants them exemption from certain things. Their brokenness justifies destruction, and pain creates a moral exception.
At the pathological level, emotional manipulation appears, which many average people also engage in, but in a pathological state, it manifests very severely. Not necessarily out of cold calculation, but out of a desire for someone to finally understand, notice, or acknowledge their pain. Suffering then becomes a means of communication. At this level, they begin to interpret their pain as an act of justice, and feel that punishing others is morally justified, but a dynamic can also develop where the environment becomes responsible for their emotional state, at which point people become either saviors or traitors. The gray zones disappear. The world appears in increasingly dramatic and extreme colors.
Harassment, obsessive behavior, damage caused by revenge, violence stemming from relationship conflicts, self-harming or emotionally manipulative behaviors towards others, and in extreme cases, acts against human life.
However, the darkest moral distortion of the 4 is not any of these, but the belief that
"Because I suffer more deeply than others, the rules do not apply to me in the same way."
And this is the point where the pathological 4 places themselves above society and all rules, and there is nothing left to prevent them from doing anything to anyone, be it themselves, or truly anyone who gets in the way of their suffering.
