Researcher - Level 9

Level 1 – The True Sage

The thinking of a Researcher operating at the first level is exceptionally clear and profound. They see deeper than others not because they have more data, but because at this level, the internal distortions that separate the average person from reality have disappeared. They are capable of seeing both the details and the whole simultaneously. What others see as complicated, they see as simple; what others consider simple, they recognize its deep interconnections. And this is the essence. This is what elevates every high-functioning individual: their ability to see differently, to think differently, and the lies that appear at lower levels do not distort their objective reality.

In this state, the 5 radiates an extraordinary calm. People instinctively feel that they have met someone who is not trying to prove anything, not competing, and certainly not dominating, but who influences others simply by being themselves.

At the first level, knowledge, which is the Researcher’s greatest virtue and the strongest measure of their life, transforms into wisdom. True, genuine wisdom that seeks to influence nothing and no one, yet does so anyway. Most people gather information to feel stronger. The healthy 5 researches because they love the truth. At the first level, however, even possessing the truth is no longer important to them. They do not want to possess reality; they want to be in harmony with it. And this is a subtle but profoundly deep difference.

A Researcher operating at the first level realizes that true security does not come from acquiring even more information; they won't find peace by reading another book, completing another training, developing another model, or understanding another system. At the first level, they finally understand that knowledge in itself is not an end but a means. They no longer observe life from the outside but stand within it, and precisely for this reason, they see it so clearly.

Level 2 – The Possessor of Pure Knowledge

At the second level, the Researcher does not yet escape the world into knowledge; rather, they use knowledge to connect more deeply with the world. The 5 operating here is extremely curious, exceptionally intelligent, and remarkably alert. Their mind quickly sees connections, recognizes patterns, and notices things that completely escape the attention of others. The difference, however, compared to the average 5, is that they do not yet want to accumulate knowledge for its own sake.

When they speak, they do not recite quotes, hide behind theories, spout clichés, and certainly do not utter platitudes. What they know, they know through their own experience, and what they say is always worth listening to. In this state, a kind of teaching quality often emerges. Not necessarily as an official teacher or leader, but as someone who naturally shares their insights without lecturing.

One of the most important characteristics of this level is that the 5 already trusts their own abilities. Not perfectly, but fundamentally yes, and they do not yet feel the need for further preparation before every situation.

This is not excessive self-confidence, and certainly not intellectual arrogance, but rather a self-assured strength awakened by knowledge and driving the Researcher's personality. At the second level, the 5's mind is like clear water. Deep, calm, and crystal clear. On the surface, there is no rushing, no desire to prove anything, no intellectual competition. What they know, they don't need to demonstrate. What they don't know, they don't need to be ashamed of.

If the first level is the state of the wise person, completely at one with life, then the second level is the vantage point where the Researcher is still consciously dedicated to understanding, and their actions are not yet driven by fear.

Level 3 – The Independent Master

The third level is the last stop in the healthy range. Here, the 5 is still operating extremely well, being creative, productive, and balanced, but a subtle distinctness already appears, which will gradually strengthen at the average levels. At the third level, competence and expertise become increasingly prominent at the core of the 5's identity. However, this is not yet a problem at this level. In fact, in many cases, this is the level where the world sees the greatest achievements from 5s.

This level gives rise to the scientist, the philosopher, the inventor, the strategist, the system builder, the innovator. The person who can see an entire field from a new perspective because they were not satisfied with the surface. They do not delve deep because they are afraid, but because they are genuinely interested in the truth and want to be sure of the results.

For the Researcher at this level, intellectual autonomy is extremely important. They dislike being told what to think by others, they do not blindly follow authorities, and they do not accept assertions merely because someone states them confidently. They want to investigate things themselves, they want to ascertain for themselves what is true and what is not. This is the level where the 5 often achieves exceptional results because they are not dependent on external validation. They can work on something for a long time without receiving immediate recognition. They can stick with an idea even when others do not yet see its purpose.

But here, the first shadow already appears. A small shadow, barely visible, but it's there.

At this level, the 5 increasingly feels that their true strength lies within their own inner world. Solitude is still not an escape for them, but it becomes an increasingly chosen path. After a crowded gathering, they don't simply want to rest, but to return to the space where they can think clearly.

To most people, they appear extremely competent, composed, and independent. In reality, however, an important part of their identity begins to intertwine with the feeling that they possess special knowledge, a special way of seeing, or special expertise. This is not yet arrogance, nor is it superiority, but that subtle detachment, which will later gradually strengthen, is already emerging.

This is the point where the 5 is still completely healthy, but the crossroads are already visible. Either back towards the first two levels, or downwards, where they can gradually begin to confuse their knowledge with their identity, and increasingly withdraw into the role of observer, where the Researcher finds themselves in an average state.

Level 4 – The Fortress of Knowledge

The fourth level is the transition between healthy and average functioning. This is the point where the 5 may still appear extremely competent, intelligent, and composed from the outside, but the walls that will ultimately shut them off from the world at lower levels are now beginning to be built; more precisely, the foundations of the wall are just being laid.

At previous levels, knowledge was a tool. Now it begins to become an identity.

The 5 increasingly feels that the world is too noisy, too fast, too emotional, too demanding, and connecting costs them more and more energy. Every encounter, every conflict, every new situation appears to them as something that drains their energy reserves. The average person collects money. The 5 collects information, knowledge, competence, expertise.

At the fourth level, the 5 spends more and more time preparing and less and less time acting. They can still be productive, they can still create excellent things, but the feeling that something is still missing already appears within them. Another book, another course, another research paper to review, another year of experience. It's as if life is constantly on the threshold, and they are still preparing to step through it.

In this state, a very sophisticated intellectual self-image often develops. The 5 begins to feel that their greatest value in the world is what they know. Because of this, they become increasingly attached to their intellectual competence. If someone questions their ideas, they no longer perceive it as a simple professional debate, but it touches something deeper within them. This is the level where the researcher begins to demonstrate their knowledge. They recite excerpts from poems, quote from short stories, if their university studies come up they drop professor names, and start telling their own experiences from university years. The worse their state, the longer they do this; here, it's just a few lines from a poem.

The walls slowly begin to build.

Their thinking remains profound, but it becomes increasingly detached from direct experience. They spend more and more time analyzing and less and less time participating, and here comes a very important point. The Researcher begins to become an observer. The tragedy of the fourth level is not that the 5 loses their abilities. Quite the opposite. Often, this is where they truly become an expert, where they build their career, where they gain the most recognition. The problem is that while they appear stronger externally, internally they begin to believe the old story again: that they will only be safe if they know more, prepare better, and depend less on others. The 5 appears impressive from the outside, but internally, the withdrawal has already begun. The first stones in the wall are in place. The gate is still open, but it's not as easy to enter as it once was.

Level 5 – The Remote Observer

The fifth level is the midpoint of average functioning, and many 5s can spend long years or even decades of their lives at this level. Here, we are no longer talking merely about a healthy need for solitude or contemplation. Withdrawal slowly becomes a fundamental life strategy. The Researcher participates less and less directly in the world, and increasingly becomes its observer, which is why we can call this state the level of the Remote Observer.

At the fourth level, the 5 was only building walls; at the fifth, they are already living within them.

From the outside, they often appear to be a perfectly functional person. They work, create, learn, talk to others, and do their duties. Their environment often doesn't even notice the deep change happening within. The 5 learns to master the art of minimal participation very well. They give just enough of themselves as is necessary. They connect just enough as is unavoidable. They share just enough of themselves as is safe, everything else remains in their inner world.

In this state, life begins to split into two parts. There is the external world that must be dealt with, and there is the internal world in which one can truly live. The 5 increasingly feels that the truly important things happen inside. Thoughts, theories, imagination, plans, and systems often seem more real to them than the reality they see with their own eyes.

This is the point where the so-called "substitute life" appears. They don't act, they think about acting. They don't connect, they start analyzing connection. They don't experience experiences, they first try to completely understand why someone else might find it an experience. The more they analyze and think, the stronger the feeling becomes that people, obligations, social expectations, and emotional situations take too much from them, which causes them, consciously or unconsciously, to begin reducing all forms of contact with people. The walls stand, the move-in has occurred.

Less contact, less risk, less emotional involvement, less unpredictability, less presence, but the 5 does not feel freer because of it. Instead, they begin to live their life in an increasingly confined space because they have to go further and further inside to finally find peace.

In relationships, a peculiar phenomenon often appears. The 5 desires closeness, but when closeness actually occurs, they instinctively step back. Not because they don't like the other person. But because closeness demands energy, openness, and vulnerability. And these seem increasingly threatening to them. Thus develops the classic internal conflict that accompanies many average 5s: they want to connect, but they are afraid of the consequences of connection. They want to participate in life, but they are afraid of its costs.

Their thinking remains sharp and intelligent, but it gradually loses its flexibility. They spend more and more time refining their own perspective and less and less time testing it against reality. In the state of the Remote Observer, the 5 still feels that they are choosing the distance, and this is one of the most important illusions of this level, that they are no longer deciding, but their personality deterioration is directing them.

They feel that they can return to full participation at any time. That they can open up more, connect more, become more involved at any time, but the walls have grown taller in the meantime. The inner world has become more comfortable, and the outer world seems increasingly alien. They are present, but only partially. They participate, but only from a certain distance. They connect, but there is always a room where no one can enter.

Level 6 – The Detached Mind

At the sixth level, the 5 is no longer simply withdrawing from the world, but is gradually beginning to detach from it. This is not yet the realm of severely impaired functioning, but it clearly belongs among the stressful and increasingly constricted states. The observer is no longer just an outsider, but increasingly feels less a part of society.

At the fifth level, the 5 still felt they were choosing the distance. At the sixth level, they increasingly feel they need it because people's behavior is becoming too much, emotions don't give but rather burden, relationships are too complicated, and life is too unpredictable. It's like when one is atomically hungover, the light is unbearably sharp and annoying. This is exactly what the 5 feels about people at this level.

The Researcher therefore retreats deeper and deeper into their head, because there they can still control things. Inside, things are logical. Inside, there are systems. Inside, there are rules. Inside, there is not as much chaos as among people.

In this state, the 5's thinking becomes psychosis-like. They often spend hours, days, or weeks analyzing the same questions, but  not because these are necessarily more important than before, but because the analysis itself begins to provide security.

Thinking becomes a refuge, and here the Researcher's personality begins to disintegrate because from here, a direct path leads to a life lived in the head. This provides short-term security, but in the long run, it results in increasing isolation. Meanwhile, the world seems more and more alien to them. Many 5s operating at the sixth level have an unstated feeling that they somehow don't belong here. As if they operate on a different frequency than those around them. As if everyone else can naturally participate in life, while they can only observe it.

At the level of the Detached Mind, one of the 5's greatest dangers is that they confuse distance with clarity. They feel that they have become more objective, while in reality, they are increasingly out of touch with the experiences that could truly correct their perspective.

The further they observe life, the less they are harmed, but also the less they live. This level is a kind of internal exile. It's not spectacular. It's not dramatic. Often, from the outside, it's almost unnoticeable. The 5 can still appear intelligent, competent, and functional, but inside, they become increasingly lonely. Not necessarily because there are no people around them, but because fewer and fewer people reach where they truly live in their mind.

The walls have now been built and are so high that they cannot climb out on their own. The bunker door is slowly closing, and the 5 is increasingly left alone inside.

Level 7 – The Secluded Tower

At the seventh level, the 5 no longer merely withdraws from the world but becomes deeply distrustful of it. In previous levels, a bridge still existed between them and the outside world. This bridge was narrow, rarely used, but it existed. At the seventh level, this bridge begins to collapse.

The image of the tower is apt because the 5 still sees the world. They observe it. Analyze it. Interpret it. But they no longer feel part of it. It's as if they are looking at people below from a high window. They see them move, talk, love, fight, work, dream, but all of this seems increasingly distant and alien to them.

At the seventh level, the 5 increasingly begins to see themselves as someone fundamentally different from other people. They don't necessarily feel superior, although this can also appear, but rather they feel they belong to a different category. As if they speak a different language. As if they perceive a different reality.

This feeling is extremely lonely and at the same time extremely self-sustaining, because the more separate they feel, the less they try to connect, and the less they connect, the more separate they feel.

The circle slowly closes.

In this state, the 5's thinking often becomes extremely theoretical. They may construct systems, explanations, or world models that are increasingly detached from reality. Not because they become foolish; quite the opposite. Their intelligence often continues to operate at a high level, the problem is that they receive fewer and fewer external corrective stimuli.

Relationships become particularly difficult in this state. People increasingly feel that they cannot reach them. That although they are physically present, they are actually somewhere very far away. They can talk to them for hours, yet there remains a feeling that something essential is not happening. Because the 5 at this point is not only hiding their feelings, but also their  presence.

At level seven, the belief often emerges that people fundamentally cannot understand them. That most relationships are superficial. That the majority don't see things as deeply as they do. These thoughts may even seem partially true to them, as they have indeed spent a lot of time studying areas that others don't access. The problem is not that they have special insights, but that they become less and less open to the possibility that others may also have truths that they don't see.

By this point, the tower walls are thick. They not only keep others out, but they now keep them in too.

The tragedy of level seven is that the original goal of the 5 was security. They sought peace. They sought independence. They sought freedom. Ultimately, however, they arrive at a place where, although no one can hurt them, fewer and fewer people can love them either.

At level eight, the situation further deteriorates. Here, it is not merely a detachment from people that appears, but the connection with reality also begins to cease. The isolation can become so deep that the mind's own worlds seem more real than the world it sees with its eyes.

Level 8 – The Isolated Consciousness

At level eight, there is no truth in what the eyes see, the ears don't believe what they hear, and experience, though tangible before them, seems merely a mirage. At level eight, the 5 has not simply withdrawn from people anymore. They no longer merely keep their distance. They no longer just live in a tower. By now, the tower has become their entire world.

This is why we can call this state the level of Isolated Consciousness.

In previous levels, the 5 still perceived that a common reality existed between them and others. Perhaps they didn't trust it, perhaps they didn't want to participate in it, perhaps they felt alien in it, but it still existed for them. At level eight, this common reality begins to disintegrate.

But not only does the common reality fall apart, but so does the personality, the main sign of which at this level is the loss of connection with their own human needs.

They are no longer detached only from others but also from themselves.

They don't feel exactly what they desire, they don't feel exactly what they need, they don't feel exactly what is missing, they only feel an ever-growing emptiness, while wandering alone within the walls now built so high that even light barely filters through at the top. This is all that remains of the 5's reality between them and the world at level 8. A barely visible pinpoint of light that still faintly reminds them.

The walls are no longer towers but a prison.

Level nine is the endpoint of this process. There, the separation is already complete. Identity, perception of reality, and connection can be so severely damaged that the person virtually withdraws from the common human world. The Investigator, who once sought truth, can ultimately become completely lost in their own inner labyrinth.

Level 9 – The Lost Investigator

Level nine is the deepest state of disintegration of the 5's personality structure. This is no longer simple withdrawal. Not loneliness. Not introversion. Not eccentricity. Not the quiet scholar who spends their time with books rather than people. This is a complete withdrawal from the common human reality.

In previous levels, some kind of connection with the outside world still existed. Faintly, fragilely, rarely, but it existed, but now the connection almost completely ceases. The 5 ultimately retreats so deeply into themselves that the boundary between the inner and outer world disappears.

Their mind is no longer simply a refuge, but the only place where they can exist. The perception of reality is severely damaged; the 5 may live in theoretical systems, fantasy worlds, or internal constructs that simply do not exist and never did in reality.

In the eyes of the outside world, the 5 may appear peculiar, unreachable, extremely isolated, or even completely withdrawn at this point, but the real tragedy does not happen externally.

The most shocking part of this level is that the 5's original virtue, clarity of vision, is completely inverted. The ability that once served to understand reality more deeply now separates them from reality. The independence that once gave freedom now becomes complete isolation. The inner world that was once a source of creativity and insights now closes in on itself.

The Lost Observer no longer observes. There is nothing left for them to observe. The connection is broken, there is no turning back, the doors will never open again.

The 5's darkest distortion is not aggression, like in the 8, nor manipulation, like in an unhealthy 3, nor the desire for control, like in an unhealthy 1. The 5's fundamental distortion is extreme detachment and emotional disengagement from human relationships.

The pathological 5 increasingly sees others not as people, but as systems, objects, variables, or problems. The danger stems not primarily from malice, but from the gradual disappearance of the human factor from their thinking.

In the darkest states, they may be capable of making decisions that cause severe harm to others, while they primarily view them as logical or systemic problems. Not because they enjoy suffering, but because they are emotionally disconnected from its consequences. The 5 is not fundamentally a manipulative type, but in a pathological state, they may begin to treat others as information sources, research subjects, or functional tools. The person's place is taken by role or utility.

The 5 often doesn't tell themselves "I want to do this," but rather "this is logically justified." Therefore, they may be able to justify ethically problematic actions that otherwise cannot be justified.

In their unhealthy and pathological functioning, the 5 may resort to abuse of information, espionage, data theft, secret surveillance, sophisticated forms of fraud, illegal research; their personality has the highest chance of committing these crimes.

However, the deepest moral danger is probably not a specific crime, but the worldview that can develop at levels 8-9: the gradual loss of emotional connection to common human reality, and the increasing belief that one's own logical system is superior to commonly accepted moral norms.

At this point, the question is no longer whether something is good or bad, but whether it is consistent within their own internal system. And when a person completely detaches from empathy while maintaining or even enhancing their intellectual capabilities, that is where the most severe distortions can appear. This is why the archetypal pathological 5 in history is often not the angry destroyer, but the cold, detached, intellectual figure who can make decisions with severe consequences without truly connecting with their human side. Yes, they are the serial killers.
