Effects of Collagen
Improving skin hydration and elasticity: Orally administered hydrolyzed collagen
peptide significantly increases skin moisture content and elasticity. According to a meta-analysis of 26 randomized clinical trials, collagen supplementation significantly enhanced skin hydration and elasticity compared to placebo. Improvements were achieved in several studies with daily doses of 2.5–10 g, but even 1 g/day of collagen peptide for 12 weeks demonstrably improved skin hydration, elasticity, and even the condition of wrinkles.
Wrinkle reduction and anti-aging: Long-term use of collagen peptides mitigates signs of skin aging. In clinical trials, collagen supplementation reduced the depth and quantity of wrinkles, while increasing the synthesis of the skin's dermal matrix (collagen, elastin).
A recent analysis based on 14 studies confirmed that a 12-week collagen treatment
revitalizes the skin: it increases hydration, elasticity, and reduces the visibility of wrinkles. These anti-aging effects are due to the fact that collagen peptide supplementation replenishes the skin's collagen content, which decreases with age, thereby making the skin firmer and smoother.
Strengthening hair and nails: In addition to the skin, collagen is an important structural protein in hair and nails (the main component of connective tissues). Preliminary data suggest that hydrolyzed collagen may improve the condition of nails and hair. In an open, 24-week study, daily administration of 2.5 g of specific collagen peptide accelerated nail growth by 12% and reduced the frequency of brittle, cracked nails by 42%. 64% of participants experienced significant overall clinical improvement in nail breakage. Furthermore, case reports and small studies indicate that collagen supplementation can also support hair growth in addition to skin and nails, especially when combined with other amino acids and trace elements. Although the effect on hair in healthy individuals is not yet fully proven, in individuals struggling with hair loss, a combined supplement (collagen, amino acids, iron, selenium) increased the effectiveness of treatment for hair regrowth in a 12-week study.
Mechanism of action: Hydrolyzed (pre-digested) collagen peptides are easily digestible and absorbable; after entering the bloodstream from the intestines, some of them reach the skin in the form of intact peptides. It has been shown that characteristic tripeptides (e.g., Gly-Pro-Hyp) derived from orally ingested collagen appear in the skin and signal fibroblasts to produce new collagen. They also serve as a source of amino acids for the synthesis of the skin's own collagen. Collagen peptides exert a protective effect on the skin by enhancing collagen and elastin production in the dermis, improving skin structure, and promoting the regeneration of damaged tissues.
